Tropical Wave over Haiti Topples Trees, Floods Streets

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - A tropical wave caused extensive damaged as it passed through Haiti Monday afternoon. The Ministry of the Interior announced measures that were being taken by emergency preparedness officials.
The ministry described the tropical wave as "sudden disturbances, with strong winds and heavy rain" as it passed through the several western departments of Haiti.
It was the thirteenth tropical wave of hurricane season 2012 and throughout the country, trees were uprooted, roofs were blown off homes and in the city power poles toppled over, billboards displaced, streets flooded and traffic paralyzed. The damage was witness by writers of Le Nouvelliste who documented the panic that all the damage caused.
The civil protection agency released a statement saying that "a storm cell, accompanied by strong winds was formed in the Caribbean Basin, in cnjuctions with the passage of the thirteenth tropical wave and caused momentary showers and strong winds, especially in the Ouest, Nippes and Sud-Est."
"Teams from Public Works and Civil Defense are already operating through the streets. The Directorate of Emergency Preparedness to the inhabitants of the departments concerned to stay indoors and to take shelter if they are outside, to stop the strong winds."
There were not many injuries if any according to Le Nouvelliste which visited the State University Hospital which reported having no cases.
Even after the storm, authorities continued to urge people to be vigilant and aware of high risk areas.
