Carl Lewis Meets Martelly, Denounces I.C. for Pledges Not Honored

President Michel Martelly and Carl Lewis

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - 9-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Carl Lewis, in Haiti met with President Michel Martelly than denounced the international community for pledges not honored.

One his 24 hours stint in Haiti the athlete expressed to President Martelly "the hopes and concerns for his administration regarding the degradation of natural resources and environment," according to Haïti LIBRE .

"What I heard, what I know about Haiti, it is that it has serious problems of deforestation... I think that the Dominican Republic, Haiti and the international community must work together so that the country can improve its economic and social situation, for the benefit of its people and all inhabitants of the island" he said.

Carl Lewis deplores that the promises made by donor countries, after the earthquake of January 2010, have not been honored.

"What we do know is that the promises were not kept, the Haitian people want to go towards development, but it can not do it alone, without help from other countries. When I will leave Haiti, I will draw their attention on this situation, I will raise my voice to demand that the promises are met.

Carl Lewis, the State Senate hopeful, is seeking the 8th Legislative District senate seat now held by Republican Sen. Dawn Marie Addiego.

On Wednesday Carl Lewis won the Democratic nomination to New Jersey's 8th Senate district. but he is fighting off complaints from the opposing party which say the track and field star voted in California in 2009, and they point to four-year state residency requirements.

Lewis’ lawyer Bill Tambussi says the Olympian’s primary residence is in Medford, NJ, and that the political residency requirements are both ‘unconstitutional and unenforceable.’
